General Summary:
Under the direction of the chief audit executive, Internal Audit, conduct reviews of designated operational areas to evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls and procedures.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Participate in the formulation of the annual internal audit plan to ensure that sufficient investment audits are performed.
2. Assist in defining the scope, establishing the audit methodology and developing testing procedures for each audit engagement.
3. Prepare audit reports, summarize and make recommendations to management on audit work performed.
4. Help conduct special reviews as requested by the State Teachers Retirement Board, executive director or senior staff.
5. Contribute to performing periodic reviews of Internal Audit departmental processes and implement value-added changes to enhance efficiency of operations.
6. Engage with management across all levels to perform reviews and deliver assistance as needed.
7. Conduct confidential evaluations independently as assigned by management.
8. Maintain knowledge of organizational functions through continued education and training.
9. Support other auditors in auditing projects in accordance with accepted professional standards.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Bachelor's degree in accounting, business or other related field required.
2. Three to five years of auditing experience required; five to eight years in pensions, investments, operations, or performance may substitute for this requirement.
3. Demonstrated experience in independently conducting audit projects preferred.
4. CPA (Certified Public Accountant), CIA (Certified Internal Audit) or other relevant professional certification preferred.
5. Solid familiarity with management control systems, organizational structures and information technology required.
6. Knowledge of spreadsheet software required; experience with database tools required.
7. Ability to work with and preserve confidential information required.
8. Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
9. Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with internal and external contacts required.
10. Excellent organizational skills and a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail required.
11. Proven ability to operate Microsoft Office programs and standard office equipment required.
12. Ability to work independently and in a team environment while meeting deadlines with minimal direct supervision required.
13. Excellent work record of attendance, punctuality and the ability to maintain a flexible work schedule to meet business needs. Occasional evening, weekend and non-regular work hours may be required.
