Role Purpose

• To assist in delivering the priorities of the Actuarial team by providing a high quality and effective actuarial service that looks to achieve solutions for complex technical challenges.

• Through the design, development and enhancement of tools and analytical reports, and undertaking data analysis to help understand and shape potential solutions to support the strategic objectives of the company through achieving plan loss ratios for Aspen whilst adhering to actuarial techniques and any other considerations.

• The role requires the ability to appropriately interact and collaborate with relevant stakeholders, both within and outside Actuarial, and to propose suitable ways of addressing any feedback.

• To develop a fundamental understanding of the Insurance Pricing Platform and associated coding languages used to deliver tools and reports to stakeholders to enable appropriate design and testing.

Key Results Areas

Strategy and Planning

• Contributes to the preparation and implementation of the Modelling team plans.

• Contribute to the delivery of key Actuarial projects in line with Actuarial strategic vision.

• Determines own work priorities and activities in line with agreed plans to ensure the achievement of personal and team objectives.

• Facilitate successful process improvement delivery.

• Performs, analyses and documents conclusions as well as making recommendations to assist Actuarial management with making sound business decisions, as directed.

Policy, Process and Procedure

• Provide appropriate level of documentation and training to all users of actuarial work, in line with professional standards, internal standards and regulatory requirements.

• Acts in accordance with and is an advocate of the Aspen Principles & Values.

• Performs appropriate checks within processes to minimize errors and inaccuracies and verify data reconciliations.

• Assists in wider initiatives, as required, and prioritised by Actuarial Management to align to business need.

• Contributes to improving the Aspen actuarial process.

• Undertake investigations of data and technical issues to identify misuse or to identify training needs, as required.

Environmental Awareness/Customer Focus

• Build and maintain positive relationship with Underwriters, Finance, Claims, Ceded Reinsurance, and all other internal functions to improve customer focus.

• Interact and collaborate with peers internally and externally to ensure good business relationships are developed and maintained.

• Provide and participate in feedback and cross training to/from other Aspen members, as required.

• Assist in wider initiatives, as required, and prioritised by Actuarial Management to align to business needs.

Technical Performance

• Gathers information and contributes to prioritisation of assigned actuarial projects.

• Analyse data and draw conclusions with assistance from more experienced colleagues.

• Act as a subject matter representative, ensuring actuarial work products are equipped with the most appropriate actuarial techniques and diagnostics.

• Development of actuarial analysis and analytics, with assistance and as required, to support greater insight to Underwriters and Actuaries and other stakeholders.

• Contributes to the development, maintenance and validation of actuarial systems, data, reporting and procedures to ensure that these are aligned with business needs and fit for purpose - to include the adoption of efficient and consistent actuarial models and processes and/or technologies, where appropriate.

Knowledge

• Good understanding of financial services industry best practice in actuarial analysis, model development and underwriting.

• Develop a good understanding of Aspen insurance and business processes.

• Strong knowledge of actuarial analysis, modelling, and communication.

• Proven knowledge and capability in applying industry and marketplace knowledge in shaping actuarial and underwriting strategy.

• Demonstrate a degree of understanding of coding, database design & effective process flow.

Skills

• Good knowledge of MS Excel (essential).

• Knowledge of programming languages such as VBA, SQL, Python, C#, R etc advantageous.

• Previous experience of working in HX Renew advantageous

• Good working knowledge of MS Access, MS PowerPoint, and MS Word advantageous.

Experience

• BSc in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Actuarial Science, Computer Programming or similar.

• Good progress and/or commitment towards becoming a qualified Actuary accredited by Institute of Actuaries or equivalent body.

• Familiarity with technical concepts and practices in the US admitted and E&S Markets / London Market / UK Commercial Lines Insurance / Financial & Professional Lines Insurance advantageous.
